Our History
Two Decades of Mastery in Luxury Wood Flooring
At Luxury Wood NYC, we don’t just sell and install wood flooring—we engineer custom flooring systems that serve as the foundation for architectural excellence.
For over two decades, we have been a trusted partner for architects, interior designers, and luxury homeowners, specializing in custom flooring solutions, historic restorations, and high-performance wood floors across New York City and beyond. Whether restoring a 125-year-old parquet floor, designing a bespoke herringbone pattern for a modern penthouse, or solving a large-scale flooring failure for a landmark property, we provide the expertise, materials, and craftsmanship to ensure every floor is built to last.
Luxury Wood NYC is led by Joe Avila, one of the nation’s top wood flooring consultants, a certified NWFA inspector, and Founder of Huggins Wood Flooring Specialist.

A Commitment to Excellence Rooted in Expertise
Joe’s journey into flooring was not conventional. Coming from finance and captaining boats, he approached the industry with an emphasis on precision, documentation, and process—ensuring that flooring systems weren’t just beautiful, but engineered for structural longevity.
Early in his career, Joe attended the National Wood Flooring Association (NWFA) Intermediate School, where he was introduced to advanced European flooring techniques by master craftsmen who had worked on landmark properties like the White House and luxury estates across the country.
It was here that he first learned:
-
Bending wood to create intricate, organic designs
-
Mixing species for dimensional contrast and depth
-
Using fuming, aniline dyes, tannic reactions, and smoking to achieve truly custom finishes
What began as an education quickly turned into an obsession with innovation and craftsmanship. Joe realized that the U.S. flooring industry was behind Europe in materials, finishing techniques, and design execution.
Determined to bring the best of European techniques to the American luxury market, he built relationships with elite European flooring manufacturers and master artisans, integrating their methods into projects across New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, South Florida, Miami Beach, Palm Beach, Beverly Hills, Malibu, Los Angeles County, Aspen, Vale, and countless other locations across the country.
Today, our deep industry knowledge and direct relationships with leading European mills and product developers allow us to provide unmatched material sourcing, technical expertise, and consulting for architects and designers looking to push creative boundaries.
